We do enjoy those oddball films and Theodore Schaefer‘s Giving Birth To A Butterfly is certainly one. Cinedigm have sent us the indie film’s trailer ahead of it’s cinematic release and streaming premiere on Fandor.
Schaefer’s directorial feature debut was considered one of the highlights of Fantasia Festival in 2021. It’s been described as Donnie Darko meets Twin Peaks, lots of David Lynch influences.
Shot on 16mm, the film follows a woman who finds her identity stolen who starts to form a bond with her son’s pregnant girlfriend. The pair go on a road trip that sees both immersed in a surreal haunting journey.
After her identity is stolen, a suburban mom (Annie Parisse, “FRIENDS FROM COLLEGE”) and her son’s pregnant girlfriend (Gus Birney, “SHINING VALE”) begin to bond and transform during a surreal, visually immersive road-trip journey to track down the perpetrators. Dynamically shot on 16mm film, this endearing and hauntingly strange cult classic in the making is also an empowering meditation on family, identity, and the underbelly of American life.
The film stars Annie Parisse, Gus Birney, Rachel Resheff, Paul Sparks, Owen Campbell, and Jessica Pimentel.
There is no word one a UK and Irish distributor, Cinedigm will give The Mysterious Giving Birth to a Butterfly a limited U.S from May. Fandor will exclusively stream the film on their channel from 16th May.
