The story of the rise and fall

Work hard, fail hard, IFC Films has released the U.S Trailer for Canadian indie comedy Blackberry. The meteoric rise and catastrophic demise of the world’s first smartphone.

Matt Johnson (The Dirties) directs and also stars in this one. The film made it’s UK Premiere at Glasgow Film Festival earlier this month promising the film “Not something you expect on the history of a phone.”  You could argue this film is more about a Canadian company getting a slice of the Silicon Valley  technology pie.

The film stars Jay Baruchel as co creator Mike Lazaridis, Johnson as the other Co-director  Doug Fregin. The two pitch the idea of a mobile device that also has a email service, their original pitch didn’t happen, however they did impress ruthless capitalist Jim Ballsilie (Glenn Howerton) who puts profit ahead of everything else.

I gave the film a 4 stars and called it “Blackberry is a slick film that’s chaotic in every way, especially in a funny way“.

Glasgow Film Festival Synopsis: Matt Johnson (The Dirties, Nirvanna the Band the Show) applies his distinct brand of filmmaking to this stranger than fiction re-telling of the meteoric rise and catastrophic fall of Blackberry phones. Research In Motion founders, Douglas Fregin (Johnson) and Mike Lazaridis (Jay Baruchel) are struggling to make headway on what they believe is the next step in smart technology. When a chance meeting with Jim Balsillie (Glenn Howerton) leads to the company propelling into profit, the need to stay ahead of competitors causes cracks to appear and the usually tight knit pair are pushed to breaking point by Balsillie’s nefarious business tactics.

Blackberry also stars Michael Ironside, Saul Rubinek, Cary Elwes, Rich Sommer, SungWon Cho, and Michelle Giroux. IFC Films will release the film in U.S on 12th May, here in the UK and Ireland it will be Paramount Pictures. No UK release date has been announced yet.
