Sunday Short Theatre – Wade (2019)

When it comes to India we always recognise the country for it’s mainstream film industry also known as Bollywood. Extravagant, Vibrant, all singing and dancing, this week’s Sunday Short Theatre choice reminds us the country offers a lot more.

Wade was released in 2019 from Ghost Animation, the collective name for filmmakers Kalp Sanghvi and Upamanyu Bhattacharyya. You call this a environmental/Climate horror which deep down is a horror scenario that any of us could face no matter what part of the world we may live in.

This 11 minute post apocalyptic animated short is based in Calcutta (Kolkotta), India. Thanks to the rising sea levels, the city is flooded, unliveable . A family of refugee’s struggle to survive takes a dark turn when they are ambushed by a group of Bengali Tigers.

The film premiered at the Annecy Animation Festival, touring many other festivals with some great reviews. The plot is stripped down, even visceral at times as the family chances of survival take that drastic turn. You could say the film treads a thin line of primal instincts. This film doesn’t hold back when humanity clashes with the Tigers, then again climate change destroys natural habitats and when two different ones cross, it’s not going to be a friendly meeting.

Creativity of Wade is striking, it’s also another piece of evidence animation is not just for kids.

In a version of Kolkata, India rendered unliveable by sea-level rise, things take a dark turn when a family of climate change refugees is ambushed by a tiger on the flooded streets.

“Wade” from the exciting Indian animation collective “Ghost Animation”, is an award-winning post-apocalyptic action animated short that grapples with what the world will look like in the wake of climate change.
