Avatar: The Way of Water Makes A Big ‘Splash’ At Official Film Chart

James Cameron is making a ‘big splash’ on the Official Film Chart, As Avatar: The Way of Water earns the biggest debut of 2023 so far as it soars to Number 1 on the Chart.

With sales in excess of 160,000 just on digital downloads, the long-awaited sequel to 2009’s Avatar scores the biggest first week for a film since Top Gun: Maverick (Number 5 this week) in August 2022.

Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical drops one to Number 2, while Elvis enjoys a surge up the chart to Number 3.

As families enjoy the Easter holidays, Hop returns to the Top 10 at Number 4, a brand new peak for the 2011 animated adventure led by Russell Brand and James Marsden among a star-studded voice cast.

Our second new entry this week comes from M3GAN, which debuts at Number 6. The Sci-fi horror quickly became a cult favourite upon its cinematic release, and enters the chart on digital downloads only.

Dropping five places is former Number 1 A Man Called Otto (7), finishing just ahead of Babylon (8) which rises one. Biographical drama Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody (9) re-enters the Top 10 after rising seven places. Finally, Puss In Boots: The Last Wish floats down five to Number 10.
